5 Chelsea Academy Dropouts Who Defended Elite Clubs: From AC Milan to Barcelona

It's no secret that Chelsea is a club that has a top-notch academy. That is evidenced by the many quality players born from Cobham.

Chelsea is also known as a club that often promotes academy dropouts to the senior team. In the 2022/2023 season there are five players from Chelsea's academy in the squad.

They are Mason Mount, Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah and Armando Broja to Conor Gallagher. So many, in fact, many players who have dropped out of Chelsea's academy are currently being enjoyed by other clubs.

So, who are the Chelsea academy dropout players who defend elite clubs? Here are five of them.

Eddie Nketiah

Eddie Nketiah is actually a Chelsea academy dropout. Arsenal signed him in 2015 when he was 16 years old.

Nketiah was trusted to play for Arsenal's first team in 2017. He then had a loan period with Leeds United in the 2019/2020 season.

So far, Nketiah has played 100 games for Arsenal, contributing 24 goals and three assists. He also still has a contract until 2027.

Fikayo Tomori

After studying at the academy, Fikayo Tomori was promoted to the Chelsea senior team in 2016. Tomori was then given many opportunities to play at Stamford Bridge while still under Frank Lampard.

However, the presence of Thomas Tuchel made Tomori's career at Chelsea come to an end. Tomori decided to leave for AC Milan in January 2021 to get a chance to play regularly.

Tomori performed well and became the main defender in Stefano Pioli's Rossoneri defense. Tomori also managed to lead his team to the Serie A title in the 2021/22 season.

Tammy Abraham

After studying at the Chelsea academy, Tammy Abraham was loaned to several English clubs. He had become the main choice on the front lines of the Blues in the Frank Lampard era.

However, Abraham was left out of the Chelsea squad following the arrival of Thomas Tuchel. The English striker then decided to leave Stamford Bridge and play for AS Roma.

Abraham has 29 goals and seven assists in 61 appearances in all competitions for Roma. He also made a big contribution when the Giallorossi won the UEFA Conference League last season.

Andreas Christensen

Brought from the Brondy academy, Andreas Christensen studied at the Chelsea academy. He was then loaned out to Borussia Monchengladbach for two seasons.

After his loan spell in Germany ended, Christensen entered the Chelsea first squad. He recorded 161 games in all competitions for the Blues.

The 26-year-old left Chelsea in the summer of 2022 after his contract expired. Christensen currently plays for Barcelona.

Nathan Ake

Nathan Ake is an English centre-back who graduated from Chelsea's academy in 2011. However, the Dutch defender rarely gets the chance to play after promotion to the first team.

As a result, Ake was loaned more to other clubs such as Reading, Watford and Bournemouth. Performing well on loan with Bournemouth made him permanent in 2017.

Ake began to be one of the defenders to be reckoned with in the Premier League with The Cherries. Manchester City finally signed him in 2020 for 45.3 million euros.
